NEWSS Weed Science Contest

Collegiate Weed Science Contest

Weed Science Contest Award

The purpose of the Northeastern Collegiate Weed Science Contest is to provide an educational experience from which students in Northeastern universities can broaden their applied skills in weed science. The contest provides an opportunity for weed science students to meet and talk with each other, be exposed to researchers from other universities and industry, and apply what they have learned. It is also hoped that the contest will increase the visibility of weed science and intensify the interest level of those participating in the discipline of weed science.

See below for current contest rules and archives of previous contests. For additional information, see the latest issue of the newsletter.

2010 Weed Contest

On July 27th the Departments of Horticulture and Crop & Soil Sciences at Cornell will host the 2010 Northeastern Collegiate Weed Science Contest at the Homer Thompson Vegetable Research Farm in Freeville, NY.

A record number of students are expected to attend this year, from as far away as Florida and Canada and Midwest from Indiana. We are looking for volunteers on Tuesday, July 27th to help our team of faculty and staff with this event. Tasks may include but are certainly not limited to proctoring students during weed or herbicide identification exams or working in teams to challenge students with “grower problems”. If you would like to help out with this great educational event and receive a free lunch, please contact Larissa Smith at lls14@cornell.edu or 607-255-2177. Your willingness to volunteer is greatly appreciated!

2010 NEWSS Collegiate Weed Science Contest Student Sponsorship Opportunity

To reduce the impact of the Weed Contest fees on students and their advisors, the NEWSS Executive Committee has created the following Weed Contest Sponsorship opportunity. A payment of $30.00 or more can be made to help off-set some of the costs for students.

You may specify a student or team to which your contribution will apply; otherwise monies received will be used to offset the participation fee of unsponsored student turnout. If you are interested in sponsoring a team, contact the Team Coach. Your contribution is tax deductible.

Payment to NEWSS must be received no later than July 19th or hand delivered at the Weed Contest. Payments can be made on-line via ACTEVA for those members who wish to pay by credit card.

For those members who prefer to pay by check, please make your check payable to NEWSS. Mail this form and payment to:
